This is Ashley Nicole. She was born in the San Miguel prison where she lives with her mother, who is a prisoner there.
These are the women of San Miguel prison. Their average sentences are very long. They make excellent pan dulce, and beautiful embroidery.
Most of their stories are difficult to understand.
What surprised me was the laughter and feeling of community in the prison.
I would not chose to live in prison, but I think that if I had to live in prison, I'd opt for the messier but social and human environment of the San Miguel prison rather than the isolation of a clean American prison....not that either one would be a desirable option
